In a recent study of over 7,000 patients with a known history of heart attack, heart failure and other cardiovascular conditions, doctors reported that patients who used more than two medicines per day for five years had a significantly lower risk of death and a lower risk of stroke. These findings suggest that patients who were prescribed more than two medicines per day for five years should be given a lower drug dose.
“Our findings show that patients who were prescribed more than two medicines per day for five years had a significantly lower risk of dying,” said Dr. Mark L. Kocher, Chief of Cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. “In addition, these findings may suggest that the use of more than one medicine per day for five years should be considered in patients who are not well controlled with drugs like rosuvastatin or atorvastatin.”
The researchers were particularly interested in the effects of rosuvastatin, which is a statin drug, on other cardiovascular risk factors. They evaluated the effects of rosuvastatin on the use of these drugs on the risk of death and on the use of these drugs on the risk of stroke.
“There was no clear evidence that rosuvastatin led to a reduced risk of death in patients who had been prescribed more than two medicines per day for five years,” said Dr. Robert K. Cuzick, M. D., of the Cleveland Clinic, and lead author of the study. “Our results provide support for the use of rosuvastatin as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for patients who have been prescribed two or more medicines for five years, including patients who are not well controlled with drugs like rosuvastatin.”
In the study, patients who were prescribed more than two medicines per day for five years had a significantly lower risk of dying, and a lower risk of stroke, compared with patients who were prescribed only one medicine per day.
